TOUR FROM OUARZAZATE TO ERG CHIGAGA IN 2 DAYS
Your unforgettable desert tour from Ouarzazate to Erg Chigaga in 2 days begins in the morning as you meet your driver and depart from Ouarzazate. Known as the gateway to the desert, Ouarzazate offers the perfect starting point for this adventure. You will first cross the stunning Anti-Atlas Mountains, where the winding roads of the Tinififft Pass provide spectacular views of rugged peaks and remote Berber villages.
Descending from the mountains, you’ll travel along the beautiful and lush Draa Valley, a 200-kilometer stretch lined with thousands of palm trees, kasbahs, and traditional mud-brick homes. This valley, rich in culture and history, leads us to the small but iconic town of Zagora, once a vital stop on the ancient caravan routes to the Sahara.
From Zagora, the journey continues to the historic village of Tamegroute. Here, you’ll have the chance to explore the famous Koranic Library, which houses ancient religious texts, and visit the underground Kasbah. The village is also renowned for its pottery workshops, where artisans create the iconic green-glazed ceramics—a unique cultural experience to witness.
Leaving Tamegroute, we head toward M’hamid, the last village before entering the vast desert. Here, the scenery changes as we begin our adventure into the open Sahara. You will enjoy an authentic camel trek, taking you deep into the serene desert environment. After approximately an hour and a half of camel riding, we arrive at the mesmerizing Erg Chigaga dunes—an untouched desert expanse stretching over 40 kilometers.
Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed with traditional Moroccan tea at your desert camp. As the sun sets over the dunes, the desert transforms into a magical display of colors, offering the perfect opportunity for stunning photos. Dinner will be served under the stars, followed by music and stories around a campfire.
Overnight at the desert camp in Erg Chigaga, where you can experience the stillness of the Sahara and sleep in a cozy Berber tent.
Rise early to witness the sunrise over the Erg Chigaga dunes, a magical moment as the first light of day illuminates the golden sands. After enjoying breakfast at the camp, we begin our return journey in a 4×4 vehicle, following the historic Paris-Dakar Rally route. This adventurous track takes you through remote desert landscapes, across dry lakebeds, and rocky plains, showcasing the diverse beauty of the Sahara.
One of the highlights of the morning is crossing the Iriqui Lake, a seasonal lake that appears only after rare rains. Even when dry, the lakebed’s cracked earth and wide-open expanse offer an otherworldly experience that’s perfect for photography.
From Iriqui, we drive to the small Berber village of Foum Zguid, where you’ll have time to rest and enjoy the surroundings. After a short break, we continue our journey to Taznakht, a town famous for its beautiful Berber carpets and handwoven rugs. Here, you’ll get to visit traditional workshops and see how locals create intricate designs using age-old weaving techniques. It’s also a great opportunity to pick up a unique, handmade souvenir to take home.
After a relaxing lunch in Taznakht, we head back to Ouarzazate. As we approach the city, the late afternoon light casts a golden glow over the surrounding kasbahs and mountains, providing the perfect ending to your desert journey. You’ll arrive in Ouarzazate just in time for sunset, bringing your incredible desert tour from Ouarzazate to Erg Chigaga in 2 days to a memorable close.
